Teri Johnson grew up in Texas falling in love with fragrance through her aunt's perfume collection, then spent years as a travel and lifestyle expert visiting nearly 70 countries before settling in New York. Harlem's history and the Harlem Renaissance pulled her in, and in 2014 she started making candles in her own kitchen. Today Harlem Candle Co. works with award-winning perfumers to build scents named for Ellington, Josephine, Holiday, and Langston. The brand has collaborated with the White House and the MET Museum, and its Purple Love candle landed in Oprah's Favorite Things in 2023. Every candle is a small tribute to jazz, glamour, and the neighborhood that inspired it all.
